Mongolian Traditional Archery Tour
Archery is one of the Three 'Manly' Sports of Mongolia. Its history goes back far beyond the days of Chinggis Khaan. It can be traced back as far as 300-200 BC, Archery contests began in the 11th Century. Mongolians use a compound bow made of laminated layers of horn, wood, sinew and bark. When unstrung it is curved in shape. The target consists of a row of small leather woven rings placed on the ground at a distance of 75 - 100 m. Originally it was a men only sport but in the last few decades women have started participating. Scoring is complicated and fun to watch, as archers shoot their arrows, judges standing next to the targets gesture and shout or sing the score to the archer. The one who scores the highest after 40 arrows is the winner.
