Kingfishers
I love watching kingfishers. They are beautiful birds with distinct colourings, behaviour and call, you know when you've seen one. That is, if you ever do - they're very shy and a challenge to photograph, making them all the more enticing. Although I've spent many (many!) hours trying to photograph them, I have very little of any quality to show for it. There is a lot of waiting involved. The first three photos bellow were the result of about 2 hours sitting in the cold and wet, backed up by months of studying them over the year. On the other hand, sometimes you just need luck and to know what you're looking for. The fourth shot couldn't have been less prepared for.
I write this mid way through Winter and it has been ages since I've heard that distinct peeping call, longer since I've seen a bird. I can't wait for the Spring and for them to start breeding again on my local river. This time I hope I'll be ready with better kit and a better understanding of their habits and behaviours.
