Staffordshire TreesVarious spelling of the surname have been found recorded in the census and parish register transcripts. The spelling Wolleter seems to have become particularly prevalent (others noted include Wallator, Woliter, Walletter, Waleter, Walliter, Wolleter, Wolletter, Wollitter). Data from parish registers (from www.FreeReg.org.uk). Please note this may be incomplete and has not been checked in the original registers: John Walleter / Wollitter = Sarah Davis at St Peters church, Wolverhampton on 2 Feb 1749 Their children: Thomas c. 8 Apr 1751, St Peters John c. 2 Jan 1756, St Peters Daniel c. 25 Nov 1758, St Peters James c. 24 Sep 1763, St Peters
Data added so far from the censuses (1841 to 1911): Samuel Waleter (aged 25) was recorded in the 1841 census as living in Dudley, Staffordshire. Richard and Ellen Wallator (see Hughley family), moved from Shropshire to Staffordshire and then to Worcestershire before returning to Shropshire. In the 1881 census they were recorded as living at Wood Farm, Tyrley, Stafford with their daughter Maria (aged 18) and son Edward (aged 16). By 1901, Richard was a 78 year old widower, but still recorded as a farmer, living at Cleobury Road, Bewdley, Worcestershire, with his daughter, Maria F (aged 36) and son Edward (aged 34). Edward later emigrated to Canada. John Walletter (aged 40) and Harriet (his wife, aged 44) were recorded as living at Stow Heath, Bilston, Staffordshire in 1881.
This family originates from Eaton-Under-Heywood, Shropshire, where the surname was originally recorded as Walliter. William, son of William and Sarah (see Shropshire Trees) and his wife Elizabeth, moved to Staffordshire and stayed there. This family, with the Wolleter surname, continues to thrive today in the UK both in and around Staffordshire and also elsewhere, e.g. Wiltshire. William Wolleter/Wolletor/Walliter/Walater and wife, Elizabeth. In the 1841 census they are recorded as Walater (transcribed incorrectly as Walster). William (aged 45) was an agricultural labourer and they were living at Brunswick Row, Lower Lane, Handsworth. They had six children (all born in Staffs.) living with them: Thomas (aged 15, a Pearl Buttoner), John (aged 15, a Rivet Maker), William (aged 14, a Pearl Cutter), Sarah (aged 12), Eliza (aged 10) and Frederick (aged 7). Frederick Wolleter (born at Handsworth, Staffs. - appears to be a son of William & Elizabeth above) and Sarah (wife, born Birmingham) were married in Birmingham in 1859 and are recorded in the 1861 census living at Brunswick Row (on the same census sheet as William and Elizabeth). They were both aged 27, both working as Grooms, and had a daughter, Jane (aged 7 mths?). Frederick and Sarah appear consistently (with this surname spelling) in the censuses from 1871 to 1911 in Walsall district, Staffs. Arthur Wolleter and wife Mary. Arthur appears to be a son of Frederick and Sarah, and a grandson of William and Elizabeth. They are recorded in the 1901 census in Walsall, Staffordshire, with 3 children. By the 1911 census (recorded as Wolletor) in Walsall, Staffordshire, they were aged 47 and 43 respectively and they had 5 children living with them: Violet Mary (aged 21), Gladys Emily (aged 19), Arthur James (aged 15), Leslie Howard (aged 6) and Johnathan Robert (aged 5).
