Cognitive behavioural therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of counselling. It is a mixture of cognitive (thought based) and behavioural (action based) therapies. These are often combined during counselling because our behaviour often reflects how we think about certain things or situations.
CBT counselling will focus more on our thoughts or behaviours depending on the condition being treated. For example, there is often more emphasis on behavioural therapy when treating obsessive-compulsive disorder, as repetitive compulsive actions are a main problem. In contrast, the emphasis may be on our thoughts when treating depression. The focus on how we are both thinking and behaving sets CBT counselling apart from other forms of counselling.
What to expect if you see a CBT Counsellor / Psychotherapist:
-
Treatment sessions with a CBT counsellor involve learning new ways to think about and understand your symptoms.
-
CBT counselling is collaborative. You will be expected to participate both in and out of counselling sessions in order to see positive changes.
-
CBT counselling is time-limited: People who undertake counselling will usually have between 6 – 10 counselling sessions. CBT counselling is not supposed to be a life-long process.
What will I learn in CBT?
CBT counselling involves learning how to change your thoughts (cognitions) and your actions (behaviours). In any given situation you will have thoughts and feelings, and behave in a certain way. These thoughts, feelings and actions all interact and influence each other. When you begin counselling, Connie will discuss what brought you for counselling therapy and how you want your life to be different. You will then work together to bring about change.
Research undertaken has shown that CBT counselling is effective in treating a wide range of conditions.
