False Widow Spider. There are several species of False Widow, this one is Steotoda Paykulliana, they normally occupy places of human habitation, sheds, etc. I have only ever seen one in the area we are concerned with. She is one pretty lady, glossy black with bright red markings but the broad red band on the front of the abdomen and the lack of red hourglass markings underneath puts it aside from the Black Widow on which it will prey, that's the good news if Black Widows turn up in the UK, the bad news is she can inflict a serious bite although only if trapped or threatened, the effect varies from person to person. Myself I got off lightly with necrosis of a mere 3 inches diameter and after the initial bite painless.Whole limbs have been affected and the pain reported as severe. The effects are known as steotosis |

Pardosa monticola A type of Wolf Spider, it seems there are only few locations for this in Essex and it is rare in some other parts of the UK. |
