Grafton Popular 4 string Plectrum Banjo This is a fairly plain banjo, but is a quality instrument with planetary tuners, built for me by Andybanjo of Faversham Kent The Grafton Popular Plectrum Banjo is his own brand. It has an 11" mahogany rim with 24 brackets and a brass tone ring; 22 fret truss-rodded neck with edge binding and hand-dressed fretting; Vintage style planetary tuners, Solid armrest and good quality adjustable "Clamshell" tailpiece. Removable resonator - and plain but very acceptable finish & cosmetics
I had to choose between getting a decently assembled plain banjo with planetary tuners etc, or a minor brand name like Ozark or Morgan Monroe etc with fancier look but lower quality. Despite the deep south USA type names those are made in sweat-shops in the Far East. Andy used imported parts but assembles in the UK. |

Goldtone Whyte Laydie 5 string Openback This bluegrass banjo was made by Goldtone of Florida and bought from Banjo.com in Marietta Georgia. Its got the brass tone ring and cloud inlays, planetary tuners and is an Old Time Open Back 5 string banjo.
Although the Gold Tone factory is in Florida, and I was there, you dont pay the state tax if you import from next state - crazy but there you are.So I mail ordered it to Orlando, saving 7%
The Gold Tone factory was later removed by a hurricane, but has since been rebuilt. They make superb banjos for the money. |

Ashbury Banjolele A very nice 4 nylon string banjolele. This is a nice quality instrument, a definite keeper.
People tend to associate banjoleles (or even all banjos) with George Formby. I am not into "turned out nice again missus" music, more moody stuff. (They say a song aint bluegrass if the woman is still alive at the end - now thats banjo!).
I have got a couple of ukes, but this banjolele is of course much louder.

 Ashbury Ashbury Banjolele (Ukelele Banjo)
Bought this from a friend on a promise I will never re-sell it, so its definitely a "keeper"
Nylon strung cross between a Uke and a banjo
When I got this from a pal who, like me, doesnt like to part with an instrument - I agreed never to sell it except back to him.
Its a banjolele made by Ashbury, but has a stuck on logo over the Ashbury one saying Griffin.
Its got a resonator, also couple of plates to fit on the back if resonator is removed.
Its not old, and in fact I think Ashbury make banjos, guitars etc, probably far eastern? (Korean), but I read somewhere that the Griffin ones were made in Germany. .
I know nothing more except I had to have it and plan to keep it! |
