Services
RoCAS provides a wide variety of services to commercial,
community and private sectors.
We are highly skilled in GIS technology and provide
clients with professional quality plans, reports and data
which can be integrated into planning and designs. In
particular, our use of GIS-based technology for
walkover survey (working with West Coast
Archaeological Services) was highlighted at the Highland
Archaeology Conference 2011 and features in one of Forest Commission Scotland's best practice guides.
We also maintain excellent relationships with many archaeological specialists in a variety of fields.
Contract / development projects
Archaeological walkover survey - Conducted to identify and record all visible
archaeological features within a defined survey area, often ahead of forestry work, woodland
regeneration or development work (wind farms, road construction, utilities work).
Archaeological Evaluation - Field evaluation allows the nature and extent of any potential
archaeological features to be established by opening a number of sample trenches across an
application area prior to development. This enables an assessment of their importance to be
made and mitigation measures to be proposed prior to determination of a planning application.
Watching brief - A watching brief allows the nature and extent of any potential archaeological
features within the entire development area to be established prior to damage or destruction by
development and to propose arrangements for their safeguarding when possible.
Excavation - Excavation, the careful exposure, processing and recording of archaeological
remains, is required on sites where features are identified. Research-based projects often involve
targetted excavation of specific sites or areas.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - GIS is used in the field and at the desk. It
increases our ability to map and record data on a site. This allows for immediate access to the
data collected for analysis and visualization as an isolated study and for incorporation with other
relevant data sources to help understand a site and its findings better.
Community Projects
Community projects allow us to connect and share our passion for archaeology with community members of
all ages. This can include community excavations, design of heritage trails, training and talks.
Collaboration/consultancy
We are currently working in close association with West Coast Archaeological Services and Highland Ecology
and Development Ltd. We provide consultancy to businesses, developers, community groups and local
communities.
Educational outreach
We also carry out educational outreach to schools and
community groups research projects and provide consultancy on
heritage and archaeology projects.
