What is the Feed-in Tariff?

The department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) under the Energy Act 2008 has introduced a tariff to incentivise low carbon energy generation.

As a reward investors in microgeneration systems can claim a Feed-in Tariff (FIT), which is paid by the energy supplier (compulsory for energy suppliers under the act).

The FIT will pay you for every Kw or unit of electricity that is generated from your solar PV system. As well as being paid you can use the clean electricity generated to power your home or business, saving you money on your bill. If the electricity is not required by your home at the time it is generated, this excess will be exported to the national grid. For this you will receive a bonus payement on top of the FIT known as the Export Tariff.

Current Tariff Rates

Every 3 moths the DECC review the FIT rates. The rate will be reduced at review according to deployment rates. To collect the current rates your system needs to be installed before the next review on the 1st of October 2013.

Submitting your application

Once you have your new solar panel system installed, a Feed In Tariff application will need to be submitted to your energy supplier. Once they receive your application you will be eligable for the Feed In Tariff payments.
