What do I do next?

If you feel your child would benefit from Speech and Language Therapy or Auditory Verbal Therapy, the next step is for you to arrange for an assessment. This is usually an hour long consultation in which your child’s communication skills are assessed and questions relating to his/her general development will be discussed with you.  With your permission, it may be necessary to liaise with other professionals to gain an accurate picture of your child’s communication skills and general development.  The results of the assessment will be clearly explained to you and set out in a report, along side making recommendations for therapy if appropriate.

What happens during therapy?

My therapy is very specifically tailored to the needs of the child and family.  Where possible, I like to include the parents and those working with the child in the therapy sessions so as to maximise progress. I will also give fun activities and lots of advice to re-enforce what we cover in the sessions.

The therapy may include;

  • Parent Coaching, enabling parents to progress and develop their child's communication skills
  • Regular intensive therapy: Either once or twice weekly.  Therapy will be based around specific aims addressing your child’s communication needs.
  • A home programme: Whereby advice and activities are given to be carried out at home.  Progress is then monitored at fortnightly or monthly intervals.
  • A school programme:  Whereby advice and activities are given to be carried out at school.  Progress will be monitored.
  • Review programme; Whereby communication needs are monitored and reassessed at 3-6 monthly intervals.
