Ted Mellors, Motorcycling's Forgotten Champion
The two leading Velocette works riders were Stanley Woods and Ted Mellors so the surprise discovery of Ted Mellors’ photograph album and scrapbook of his racing years prompted the author to write his story. The 1930s was a tremendous decade in TT history; motorcycle design and performance had improved out of all recognition and from the mid-1930s the TT and the Continental Grands Prix were dominated by the two great British manufacturers, Velocette and Norton as they battled for supremacy. The album is produced in its entirety and the story of Ted’s career, including many photographs, together with descriptions and photographs of a number of his fellow riders has been written by Peter McManus. Ted rode in the TT from 1927-1939 and was a works rider for New Imperial and Excelsior before joining Velocette in 1936. Always near the top in the TT on Velocettes and lightweight TT winner on a Benelli in 1939. 350cc Champion of Europe in 1938 and 1939, equivalent to the World Championship today. This book merits a place on the bookshelf of every motorcyclist who was interested in those epic days.
