Summer.
Some three days after we lost our Weimaraner Sky our house felt so empty that we went to the Dogs Trust to look for a rescue dog.
We chose Summer, an eighteen month old neutered Doberman Cross Bitch. She was very thin and came with some baggage. She had been out to two homes and returned to the Trust. She had been on the run and was very wary.
We nurtured her and after only two weeks took her with us on a caravan holiday to Scotland which she enjoyed, in fact forever after she loved going in the caravan. She hated the car, was wary of water, could not bear to be left outside the house and didn’t like the wet.
Her appetite was prodigious and she would eat anything. We guessed that she had had a bad time as a puppy, could have been thrown from a car etc.
She became a friendly, but rather aloof dog. She was never really trainable but fitted herself in with our lifestyle very easily. Sadly it was not sensible to let her off the lead other than in our enclosed garden.
A very pretty dog who gave no real problems . Somehow we could never really get through to her and we felt so sad that we could not see her really run in the open and show her paces
At the end of 2008 she started to need help to jump up into the car to go out. Walking became slower and an examination showed a nasty fast growing tumour at her rear. Pills and operations were not an option and we said goodbye to a friend of 12 years companionship.
We thoroughly recommend a visit to the Dogs Trust if you are thinking of getting a dog. You can home a mature well trained dog who will give you a wealth of affection without the pains of puppy training.
