Your Guide to Measuring Accurately
Curtain Width Measurement
Measure along the length of the curtain track, not the window.·
If the track, or pole, has not been fitted, allow an extra 15cm (6inches) either side of the window, to allow for the curtain to be pulled back from the window.·
For corded tracks, where the track overlaps, measure both tracks and then add together.·
Curtain Drop
Sill length – measure to the window sill.·
Above the radiator – measure to the radiator, or just above, if you prefer.·
Floor length – measure to the floor.·
Puddle length – very fashionable at present, add another 20cms.
*Double check measurements
*Not all windows are square to the floor at both ends
*Not all wall angles are square
*Use a metal tape
General Guidelines...
Track – measure from the top of the track.·
Pole – measure from the bottom of the ring.·
*Tab Tops - measure from top of pole and measure the diameter of pole.
Pelmets can be made with buckram (a stiffening with matching, or coordinating fabric attached) or as a mini curtain, which can be fixed, with Velcro, to a ‘shelf’, just above the curtain to obscure the curtain track.
·The pelmet shelf needs to be made out of a soft wood, and measure about 7cm deep, from the wall, and extend over the rail by 3cm at either end.
·Measure the length of the pelmet shelf and include the two sides.
·The pelmet can be a depth of between 25 and 45 centimetres. It can be deeper if preferred, or deeper at the ends (extreme sides of the window).
·Remember, if it is too long, it will cut out light and swamp the window.
Some blinds are best fitted inside the recess – the same size as the window, others outside the recess – larger than the window.
In the Recess
·Measure the drop of the window, check both sides. If different give the largest measurement.
·Measure the width of the window, check the top width and the width at the bottom. Please give the smallest measurement, as this will insure a smoother glide.
Outside the Recess
· Measure the drop of the window and, if possible add 10cm for the top and 10cm for the bottom.
·Measure the width of the window and add 10cms at both sides.
These can be made to be the size of the top surface of the bed (headboard to headboard) or surface plus the fall to the floor, or just a strip at the foot of the bed.
·A strip – measure the exact width and length you would like to cover, ie width to cover the mattress, or duvet, or half way, or to the floor X depth to cover the surface of the bottom part of the duvet , or this area plus the duvet drop, or this measurement to the floor.
·Surface of bed plus fall – measure the exact width of the area to be covered.
·Surface of bed – measure surface area only.
If you have a favourite cushion pad that needs a new cover, just send the width and length measurement. Let me also know if you would like:
·Zip or flap opening
·Piping
·Frill – material gathered in the same or coordinating fabric
·Piping and frill
·Braid with tassels
·Tassels on the corners
