Lasius Niger (The black garden ant)
Most commonly found in Europe and Asia
Lasius Niger colonies can reach in size of up to 15,000 workers but on average between 4,000-7,000
Lasius Niger queens can live on average 12 years
The queen is roughly 7-9mm long and is black in colour where as the workers are 3-5mm long and are dark brown-black in colour
They tend to make their nests underground or under stones and in rotten wood
The first workers are generally very small compared to later generations.
We will supply the ants in a test tube. Which will have some water at one end behind some cotton wool. You will receive a mated Queen with or without workers as specified

Messor Barbarus (The European Harvester Ant)
Most commonly found in Southern Europe
The colonies can grow very large in size
Workers are of various sizes, there are two types of worker, Minor and Major
The Queen is roughly 15-18mm where as the workers are between 3-13mm
Messor Barbarus queens life span is typically 10-15 years although in some cases can live anything up to 25 years
Both are glossy black in colour
They tend to make thier nests in sand loam
Their food source includes- honey water, fruit and seeds (they particularly like grass seeds)
