FILM SELECTION AND PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT
Our Objectives:
The aim of the Film Club is to encourage audiences to enjoy films that might not normally be available in main cinemas. Consequently our objective is to provide a range of films in the annual programme including independent British and Foreign films, Documentaries, Animations, Short films and ‘Golden Oldies’ (a chance to revisit some classics of the past) - although we also like to include 2 – 3 interesting mainstream films.
Where we get our ideas from:
We like to encourage all film-goers, club members and non-members alike, to contribute to the film selection procedure. Therefore towards the end of the Film Club season we begin the process of producing the programme for the next season by asking all in our audiences for film suggestions which meet the range of criteria described above.
The club committee then has a discussion of all the suggested films in order to produce a shortlist of 16. The content of the shortlist will reflect as many as possible of the categories that we like to include.
Why suggested films may not be selected:
i) We’ve shown the film before (becoming more frequent as the club grows older!)
ii) There are more suggested films in a particular category or of a particular type than we have room for in the programme (in particular we may favour films from foreign countries that we haven’t featured for a while)
iii) We wish to maintain a variety and balance of different types of films within the programme
iv) We are unable to obtain a license or DVD to show the film
In doing so we recognise that, in achieving this balance, many good film suggestions may not be included at this time – but they are held in reserve possibly to be included in future programmes.
The final programme:
Subsequently the committee checks the license and DVD/Blu ray availability of the 16 films in the shortlist before making the final choice of 12 to produce a varied and balanced programme in line with our stated objective.
