1 Thessalonians Ch 3 v9
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
A true story is told of a child, from a wealthy English family, in moving to the deep of their swimming pool, out of his depth, he got into serious trouble and was in danger of drowning. Alerted by screams from other children the gardener jumped in and saved the child.
The parents of the child were so grateful for his actions that upon learning the gardener’s son was hoping to attend university in a year or two to become a doctor, they offered to pay his tuition fees.
Many year later, the same child, now a man fell seriously ill with pneumonia. The best doctor available was Sir Alexander Fleming, the developer of penicillin, none other than the son of the gardner who had saved the man’s life many years before.
Rarely has a man owed his life twice to the same person.
Gratitude not only improves our attitude it has a way of bringing rewards later down the line and we should never miss an opportunity to give thanks to God and all the people in our lives who help us .
Tuesday 7th November 23
Habakkuk Ch 3 v 17 - 19
Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Saviour.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.
These verses describe an economic nightmare the writer is living through. Vines producing no fruit, the livestock are not thriving.
Were we to be faced with similar problems we would be scrambling about trying to get by and possibly dreading the future.
Yet despite being in desperate circumstances he still rejoices in the connection he has with God , because God gives him the strength to keep going.
So if we should find ourselves fearful about the future, stop, take a breath, praise God and give him thanks. He is at work even if we can’t see him. Then notice the difference it makes to your life.
Wednesday 8th November 23
Luke Ch 15 v 23 - 24
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
The story of the Prodigal son……..but what about his older brother, filled with resentment. He’d never asked his father for anything, yet had to watch his younger, ungrateful brother being lavished with gifts and a party. Wondering why he was being feted on his return when he didn’t appear to deserve it!
The father’s words tell of the joy he has at his son returning to the family home. He is well aware of the worth of the older brother, but the younger brother has recognised the error of his ways, he is no longer lost to the family. Time to celebrate, the same way God does when someone who has been lost returns to the Church family.

Ephesians Ch 5 19 - 20
Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As Christians we have an obligation to live and behave in the way God wants us to. Being truthful, harbouring no grudges, spite or bitterness. Instead we should be kind, and ready to forgive. People will know we are Christians by our love.
Friday 10th November 23
Psalm 107 v 8 - 9
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
For he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
Do we each miss blessings God sends?
A poverty stricken elderly woman in Europe complained her son in America was ungrateful for all the things she had provided for him in growing up. ‘Does he ever send you any money?’ the friend asked. Never a penny, he sends pictures quite often. But I could really do with a helping hand with my finances. She then pulled out her Bible to show the friend her pictures. The ‘pictures’ were fresh crisp $50 and $100 bills. The most generous of gifts at the turn of the 19th century.
She hadn’t recognised what she had.
We must all be careful to appreciate the many blessings in our lives.
Saturday 11th November 23
Luke Ch 6 v 38
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
When we bless others we are blessed.
When we love, we are loved.
When we give, we greatly receive.
If we are willing to give we will receive a lot more in return.
Gratitude unlocks the doors of generosity.
If we share generously and willingly from the abundance in our lives, we will be grateful we did!
