Anakin enters a pod race* to win money to repair the ship. Which is taking the queen of Naboo to Coruscant. They can’t use their own money because it is the wrong currency. Anakin wins the pod race.
*a pod race is where anything can compete in a high speed race. The engines in a pod are very powerful.
