Walter Thomas Shobbrook Walter is commemorated on the St. Michael and All Angels Parishioners WW1 memorial in Sunninghill,Berkshire and also on the Sunninghill Comrades Club memorial. Any idea where the Sunninghill/Berkshire connection comes from? I'm obliged to your website for confirming his parentage as given on Ancestry. Thanks. Leila Clarke Posted by Leila Clarke on 27 March 2016 Reginald Shobbrook My Gx2 Aunt was Ellen Cutting who married Reginald Shobbrook so was interesting to see your tree - many thanks Posted by Helen Harley on 27 August 2015 J Shobbrook I live in East Coker, Nr Yeovil, Somerset and have dug up in my garden a George 3rd penny dated 17?? with the name J.HOBBROOK stamped across the face. I think these coins were used as tokens in years gone by. I wonder if this would be of interest to you. If so please advise forwarding address. Yours sincerely David Holland Posted by David Holland on 03 November 2012 Dear David, What an interesting find! Thank you so much for getting in touch with me, but sadly I don't think think that the coin is connected with my Shobbrook family name. I have had a look at Ancestry.co.uk to see if the Hobbrook name exists, and find that it does. There are over 90 entries of varying kinds -births, deaths, marriages and census records. There do seem to be quite a few listed in Somerset in St James, Bath, Keynsham, Walcot and Lyncombe and Widcombe. It's fascinating to wonder how and when your coin was dropped. I know how exciting it is to discover new facts and new ancestors through persistence and a bit of detective work! I will have another look to see if I can locate any Hobbrooks in your area and will let you know if I make any further progress. With kind regards and many thanks Gill Sims McLennan Posted by Gillian Sims McLennan on 12 November 2012 Distant Relatives I've recently been researching my family history as I acquired a number of old family photos from my late father. His mother (my grandmother) was Mary Shobrooke, sister of William and Ernest, 1883-1976, daughter of Wiiliam George Shobrooke and Elizabeth (Westlake) Shobrooke. I think we would have to go back to the late 1700s to find where our ancestors are directly connected but we can all be traced back to John Shobbrook (father of Humphrey) who died in 1569. I was amazed at how big the family was and how many times names have been repeated through the generations. Your grandfather, Thomas, gave me a particular headache as he had a cousin called Thomas and they were born a few months apart. I've made my family tree public on Ancestry.co.uk, calling it 'Toms/Shobrooke' but am still working on it. There are distant relatives in USA and Canada, as well as Australia, and I've just posted a photo to the Bassett family in Illinois (they're related on the Toms side) as it had no direct link to me but they have a website devoted to their family and ancestors; coincidentally, there are Shobrookes also living in Illinois! Posted by Jane Clayton on 24 April 2012 Dear Jane, Many thanks for your message. It's always good to hear from fellow Shobbrooks who are researching their branch. I will have a good look at the tree when I get back home to ascertain just where your line branches off. I have had communications from several Shobbrooks in the USA and Australia in the past and they seem to to have originated from the Oakhampton area, whereas mine were from the village of Ide and the Exeter area. It's all so fascinating! Regards, Gillian Posted by Gillian Sims McLennan on 25 April 2012 Dear Jane, Since returning from holiday I have had a chance to study the family tree properly to see where our 2 branches meet. I think that your tree stems from William b 1662 son of John (1635) and Joanne Ffarley and my tree stems from his older brother John (1661). All good wishes Gill McLennan Posted by Gillian Sims McLennan on 11 July 2012 Lovely to read your information Hello, i am the 1st son of Thomas Michael Shobbrook who sadly died last year. I have 1 brother and 1 sister and we all live in Weston-Super-Mare. My father was resonsible for putting together the family tree with his father (Arthur on the clock tower plaque) which goes back to 1581. They both travelled around the grave yards and churches of many areas. I have now inherited the ropewalk in Newton Abbot which has it's own history i believe. Anyway i thought i would make contact. Thanks John Posted by John Shobbrook on 26 July 2011 Hi John, How lovely to hear from you! Fortunately I did manage to get back in touch with your father a few months before he died. We had not seen eachother since we were young children and it was so good to have an opportunity to have a long chat and catch up on the intervening (50!) years. I have always been fascinated by the original family tree that your grandparents created and after my father's death (at the age of nearly 94) I decided to continue with the history and descendents of all his cousins. It has been a real delight as I have managed to make contact with Bob in Australia and Jane in Kent and we recently had a wonderful get-together in June when Bob's sister Val and family came over from the USA. Jane, her brother Richard plus the American contingent all came here to Norfolk and we spent a great weekend together. It was particularly special as most of us had never met before, despite all being Shobbrooks! I am sure your grandparents would have been delighted to see such a gathering, as would my father. What fun, to have inherited the Ropewalk.....is it still in operation? I read about it once when I found reference to it quite by accident on the internet. It said that it was owned by the Shobbrook family but I wasn't sure which branch it was referring to. I have had some communication with your sister Jillian (my namesake!)in the past. When we spoke,Tom said she was to be the custodian of some of the old family history documents. One day when you have time perhaps you could ask if she has any very old photos at all which bear the names of the folk on them. My Aunt Hazel died leaving a very old album of photos, none of which are marked with names but which must go back to the Victorian era as the ladies are all in crinolines. I think they must have come from our great grandmother Emily as she lived with my grandparents at the very end of her life. I would love to be able to identify some of them and there is always the possibility that there are some other copies within the family. I am so pleased to hear from you. Do keep in touch. Kind Regards, Gill Sims McLennan (Shobbrook) Posted by Gillilan Sims McLennan on 26 July 2011 Dear Gillian, What a surprise! Tom and June Shobbrook were in fact my cousins twice removed. My mother Frances Carpenter was Arthur's cousin, her mother being Mable Shinner was a sister of his mother Alice. I remember Arthur fondly as he and Mum were very close. Also I remember Tom and June who we saw fairly regularly when my brother and I were children. What a surprise when I read that Tommy had died... as a youngster he was always a "bit of a lad". Tom Linda and the 3 children we saw regularly whilst we lived also in Weston Super Mare during the 1970's.However My husband and I and my three daughters returned to Devon in 1985 to live and I have been living in Newton Abbot for almost 30 years. Unfortunately after that we seemed to only really meet up at funerals! I last saw Tom although I had bumped into Tom a few times in Newton Abbot. I will certainly let my Brother know this up to date news as he too has looked into the Family history( Shinner/Francis/Carpenter ) Gillian House (Francis) Posted by Gillian House on 16 July 2014 | ![]() |
