My friend Paul recently discovered from a "Seaman Manual that the liquid inside the compass was usually a mix of alchohol and distilled water and it cushioned the movement of the dial inside the compass thus taking the strain from the balance mechanism. The ' card dial' in the compass was actually Mica and so was not affected by the liquid.
