A question that is often - and quite understandably - asked. It takes as long as it takes, is the simple answer.
You will not have to complete a set number of hours before you can take your practical driving test. However, the DVSA, the government department that sets the standards for new drivers, recommend that if you have had no driving experience you should have an average of 47 hours of paid instruction with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), with 20 hours of practice between lessons in their own car. Because this is an average figure, some new drivers take longer and some take less.
I train new drivers to drive cars. I pass on skills for them to be able drive safely and responsibly, to be aware of the consequences of their actions, and to drive with a duty of care not only to themselves and their passengers, but also to others that we share the road with. I train them to drive so that they have a good chance of staying collision free and staying alive for the rest of their, hopefully, long lives.
And that takes as long as it takes!
At any time you can ask me if I think you are ready for your practical driving test, and I will give you an honest Yes or No answer, and explain my reasonings. If you don't ask me, there will come a time when I will ask you if you think it is time you thought about taking your practical driving test.
I will teach you the required life skills to become a safe driver - for life - not just to pass your practical driving test. I will also ensure that you are as well prepared as you possibly can be on the day of your practical driving test. However, I cannot be responsible for you either passing, or failing, your practical driving test – and neither will your examiner. The responsibility for that rests entirely in your hands . . .
