Our History
Michael Betts Opticians came into being in July 1996, following the retirement of Melvyn Shalks, who had been in partnership with Michael Betts for some twenty six years. Michael Betts had joined Melvyn Shalks as a junior prior to his qualification, meaning he has been involved with this business for almost forty years.
The practices have been built on the philosophy of providing friendly, professional, and above all personal service, always trying to attend to the small details. In this way many patients have followed the practices through the years, and many patients who attended as children, now bring grandchildren along. In these days of the ever expanding conglomerate multiple practices, these ideals seem to be being missed by the discerning patient, and we are constantly being told so by patients old and new.
As recently as February 2008, Alan Smith joined the practices as our Optometrist. He has rapidly come to embrace the above philosophy, and he is seen as a real asset to the practices.
Our reception staff have been with the company twelve years for the longest serving member, one member has served over five years, and the latest receptionists have joined the practices within the recent past, following the leaving of another receptionist who had given five years service. We tend to have a family feel within the team which most people think shows.
