APRIL 2013

Easter is over but still cold!!!!!!! I have mixed feelings about cut flowers. Once a flower it cut it has effectively been killed and will only last a matter of days.If by accident a daffodil or rose breaks in the wind then I don't mind bringing it in to the house, other than that I prefer to see them in the garden. Indoor flowering plants on the other hand are different - I still have the ponsettia from Christmas going strong on the kitchen window sill.

JANUARY 2013

Happy New year to you all!!

A new look to the site for a New Year...the theme for Jan- Mar  WINTER

OCTOBER 2012

ONWARDS (and upwards)
I think most of us feel cheated out of a summer. We never really had those long hot days and now the fleeces and jumpers which were hardly put away are re-emerging!
No amount of wishing will make summer return so lets celebrate Autumn!!!
It’s only 68 days to Christmas (at the time of writing) but one can still think of it in a leisurely fashion alongside the joys of Autumn which for me are:

  • Log fires,
  • Scented candles of cinnamon and spice,
  • Looking up recipes for soups and then making them for the freezer.
  • Deciding on food for the festive season ie chutneys and jams etc.

I’ve just ordered some Kilner jars.

  •  Autumn clean (like spring clean) then the house is ready for entertaining family and friends.

I want to decorate my kitchen in the next few weeks as I shall be spending a lot of time there!! (All white).
The long evenings can mean too much television!! Though its nice to welcome back ‘Strictly’, frivolous bling!!, so if you can make something at the same time as watching, then the time isn’t wasted. Crochet /knit patchworks- easy!!

SEPTEMBER 2012

The nights are drawing in and there is a chill in the air. Each day more geese fly in to winter here. So now is the time to make sure you have enough logs to see you through the winter. Apples should be picked and fallen ones retrieved from the ground before they turn. Wrap each apple in newspaper and store in a cool dark and dry place. Alternatively peel, chop and par boil, then when cooled store in plastic containers and freeze, ready for apple pies and crumbles.

Dare we mention Christmas at this stage? well yes if you want home made chutneys and jams. I can recommend Delia Smiths recipe for Christmas chutney.. delicious and easy to make. For more Christmas ideas select CHRISTMAS from the menu.
