THIS TOUR will provide an understanding of Gaelic Scotland in recent times commencing with the great land struggles which led to the creation of the Crofting Act of 1884, the establishment of An Comun Gaidhealach, and the disproportionate impact of the Great War on already weakened Gaelic communities.

 

You will see in stark relief, 20th Century impacts including the transformation of the landscape following the establishment of the Forestry Commission, the flooding of many glens through the work of the Hydroelectricity Board, and some of the efforts of the Highlands and Islands Development Board to stimulate economic regeneration.

 

The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 is another step along the path to protecting and securing the culture of the Gael.

 

We will visit thriving rural communities in Wester Ross and Skye to see its effect and to listen to stories and song which keep alive memories of the bitter struggle to win fundamental rights to the land which all Gaels hold close to their hearts.
