THE LONG Scandinavian domination of the western seaboard effectively ended in 1263 at the Battle of Largs. However, within a generation, the military and political objectives which the Scottish kings had of moving into the vacuum created by the withdrawal of the Norwegian presence, were totally disrupted by the outbreak of war with England.

King Robert the Bruce, in that long struggle, had turned to the men of the West and particularly clan Donald to secure his throne and in so doing allow the establishment of a semi-autonomous kingdom on the western seaboard.

 

This tour will examine the nature of that maritime kingdom, visit the key sites associated with the exercise of semi-regal authority and provide an understanding of the fundamental importance of seapower in the 250 years maintenance of that regal power. Visits to Islay and Skye will also illuminate the rich cultural and musical traditions associated with this high point of Gaelic culture in the West.
