What do gardeners do in the winter?

by Unknown - 20:12 on 22 November 2011

This is the question I am asked on numerous occassions at this time of the year.

The answer is that as long as heavy snow does not persist or winter frosts bite too deep into the ground, this is actually a perfect time to get the garden in order. From April to Novemebr I always find myself running about  trying to keep weeds at bay, lawns cut short and looking their best together with seasonally planted colourful containers. Although satisfying, it is routine. I do not have much time to appreciate the fun stuff;planning and planting new displays.

Like mine hopefully your garden has been tidied for the winter. (Shrubs and hedges pruned, herbaceous perrenials cut back and fallen leaves and weeds removed.) If it hasn't get in touch. The bare uncluttered landscape of your garden provides you with the best occassion to visulise and plan new designs, shapes and colour schemes.

With many plants being dormant over the winter period allows us to safely lift and relocate existing plants to more favoured locations. If not too cold herbaceous perennials can be split to increase their numbers and rejuvinate them.

Field grown or bare roots trees and hedging plants can be bought far cheaper than if they are pot grown and will not require watering to aid establishment. To protect my most exposed aspect of my garden I have just planted 30 purple beech hedging plants. I will look forward to the spring and summer when people notice the new unfolding leaves turning purple as opposed to the much more common green.

In this country during spring and summer where a dry, sunny day or evening is a bonus the only major chore I want to do in my garden after work is to put up my deck chair and open my bottle of beer. All the work done now will reap major benefits for me and my family  to enjoy when the spring and summer comes.
