Welcome to the Brethyn Online Research Network, a 'spin off' from the 'From Sheep to Sugar' project!
We are continuing to investigate the history of the Welsh woollen industry from 1650 - 1850, and the production of a cloth called 'Welsh Plains' specifically for the Plantation Trade.
Now we are also looking at the history of wool production in England - with exciting findings.
We are meeting up next on Saturday 21st October 2023 at 2.00pm on Zoom For link and more information check out here or send your details to us via Contact Us.
We sometimes have speakers - but mainly its a chance to catch up and keep in touch.
Last year Dr Adam Coward joined us to share his perspecives on 'Welsh Plains' ... also check ...
The 'From Sheep to Sugar' project is now the focus of an exhibition at the Newtown Textile Museum:
The project was managed by the Learning Links Interntional team, who spent more than 2 years exploring the links between Wales and the Slave Trade before applying for support to take this research further with help from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales.
Now folks who are interested to carry on this research meet up on Zoom on Saturday lunchtimes on the Third Saturday in the month to discuss further research and to share findings, as well as considering new avenues for research and ways of telling these stories. We also invite speakers, show short films, share some poetry and give space for presentations.
Learning Links International is developing a range of regular Zoom sessions, weekly and monthly to enable people from a range of countries who have an interest in our entwined histories to get together in these strange and difficult times, and carry on informal research and sharing of these often hard, but fascinating stories of Black History:
