Pizza Bites Are Shite…..

When ordering them, I mistakenly thought they were going to be little bits of pizza – they turned out to be little brown balls with a rock-hard covering of something pretending to be breadcrumbs.

The inner layer was meant to be cheese, tho’ it didn’t have the consistency of any cheese I’ve ever come across, and it tasted like the flavouring used on particularly vicious cheese & onion crisps.

The middle was some red stuff which tasted of nothing at all - I was thankful for small mercies.

I chawed my way through some of them, then gave up  and they went out for the Crows and Seagulls  - the Blackbirds would have none of it.

Pizza Bites are the most un-pleasant thing I’ve eaten for a long time, and made me realise how much our perception of what is food has degenerated – that stuff like that is considered to be food and is possibly even popular.  People feed that crap to their children, then wonder why they’re bouncing off the walls!

Fifty – even forty – years ago, if a person was presented with those Pizza Bites as food – they’d raise a quizzical eyebrow.

It took me a long time to get rid of the taste – tho’ I can’t even describe what the taste was.  It built up after I’d finished eating them too, and wouldn’t go away.  Peppermint Creams helped, but not much.

My feeling was that I wished I could cough them up as a pellet, like an owl does. That my body would reject them - refuse to let that shit go through my system - wrap it up in a neat little pellet and eject it from my person.

But that didn’t happen.  I had bad heart-burn instead. Something inside me knew there was something wrong with what I’d eaten.

I’ll stick to fish &chips – that’s real food.  You know where you are with fish & chips.

A poem by Friend Wend.........

Small things

Sitting in a van

in the rain

watching the sea foam

through misting windows,

*

pulling open paper wrapping

the appetising smell

smacks us in the face

as waves slap on the beach

*

herring gull stands

sideways on, one eyed

one-legged, thinking

of chips, waiting

*

bite through the crispy fried

outer layer into hot soft potato

satisfied chewing and munching

snug in the dry warm cab

*

breathing, steaming, eating

staring into blurry horizon

through steady play of rain

splashing on the screen

*

tip tap tapping on the roof

trickling down the gulleys

mouths and fingers full of chips

delighting in this.
