Holocaust Memorial Day - an interfaith service was held in Basildon on Sunday 27th January, 2012 to commemorate Holocausts that have occured world-wide during the 20th and 21st centuries.
Chairman of Basildon Forum of Faiths Jack de Metz, of Southend and Westcliff Hebrew Congregation writes: "27th January provides an opportunity for everyone to learn the lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. And to apply them in the present day to create a safer, better future.
On Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) we share the memory of millions who have been murdered in the atrocities of the past in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today."
"On this special day, millions will join across the world, coming together to pause, to remember and reflect on what we need to do to create a future free from the dangers of discrimination."
A special exhibition, remembrance service and the signing of the Book of Commitment marked the week's events. The programme, planned in partnership with Basildon District Borough Council, Basildon Library, and the Towngate Theatre, were well attended by local people, including many local schoolchildren.
The theme for this year's national event was "Communities Together: Build a Bridge".
