Welcome to Springfield,Gretna and District
S.M.B.C
Springfield, Gretna and District Short Mat Bowling Club was formed in the mid nineties, providing both the sporting and social activities associated with short mat bowling. The club membership is open to everyone, male, female, young and old. The current membership is 36, and the members ages range from 7 to 76 years old. The club meetings are every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm, in the Gretna social club.
The bowling club organises a range of events, including a coach trip to Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk, where the World Championships Bowling is held each year. Members taking part in this holiday can enjoy Potters leisure facilities, or participate in the doubles, and triples bowls competition. Our club has been very successful when competing at Potters.
The club plays open competitions throughout the short mat bowling season, which runs from the beginning of October to the end of March. These competitions are always very well supported by other bowling clubs throughout the area. The Bowling Club also competes in the Border Short Mat Bowling League, competing against teams from both sides of the border; these league matches are held monthly and take place at our home venue throughout the season.
The club has two” Fun Bowling “events each year which involves bowling through various obstacles, and followed by an American buffet supper. The fun night is a great social occasion and adds to the friendly atmosphere the club generates. The club also arranges a Christmas meal at the indoor bowling club in Carlisle. An in-house club competition takes place followed by a reasonably priced three course meal.
Come along and give indoor bowling a try! Tuition is always available and free. We can let you use some of our spare bowls at no extra charge. Club nights continue throughout the year, so you are always welcome. Newcomers will have ample opportunity to learn a new sport and those who are already familiar with indoor bowling can enjoy a social evening and improve their skills in this very enjoyable, engaging and competitive sport.
