PAPARAZI JUNIOR ACADEMY (KENYA) & ORPHANAGE
To help needy children access the equal opportunity of education MOTTO: Focus for a better future
HISTORY: Established in 2009 to help the school age children in a poor area of UKUNDA to access education. The children cannot receive education in the normal way due to financial and other constraints. UKUNDA: Is a small town situated South of Mombasa, close to the popular holiday resorts on Diani Beach. (See Google Earth for more information) The children attending school are either orphans or from the poorest families in the area. Some of them are HIV positive. TEACHERS: Currently There are two full time teachers, Madam Gertrude and Mr David in the school and they are helped by part time staff when at all possible. All are trained and qualified, teaching kindergarten and at primary level. An additional teacher is required due to rising numbers. OTHER STAFF: The teachers have the help and support of Abdalla, the founder , a cleaner, a cook a co-ordinator secretary and a gardener as well as a security man. In total there are usually around 14 staff in total with only Abdalla, Gertrude and David working full time PUPILS: In 2009 there were 40 pupils in school. 15 of those were orphans and 4 of those HIV positive. The remainder were from poor families that could not afford education in any other setting. NOW in Summer 2015 there are 150 Children, 34 orphans and the rest from local families that would not be able to feed and educate their children without the help of Paparazi Junior Academy There are more orphaned children and HIV Positive children expected to require places soon.
THE SCHOOL: The school is currently situated in a rented house, but with the help of well wishers and supporters it is hoped that land can be purchased to build a new school or at least move into larger premesis. with better facilities and a more user friendly design. THE CHALLENGES The school/orphanage faces a number of challenges mainly due to:- Shortage of land available for use of education We would love to move into larger premises as soon as funds allow Not enough chairs and desks or rising number of pupils Shortage of text books We have pupils & Orphans with an age range of 2 years to 14 years and never have enough books to go around and cover all abilities More teachers required and better opportunity to pay them a fair wage All of our staff especially the teachers work for a very small wage, sometimes when funds are short the teachers loose out on their pay to feed the children! Shortge of playground facilities and toys for children We have quite a good selection now of indoor toys but need to develop our outside facilities Lack of funds for purchasing modern teaching materials DONATIONS have been affected badly during the last two years. Because of terrorist threats and the advice of various Governments advising against visiting Kenya our donations have been reduced by 75%! Usually local hotels would give our details to any visitors wanting to visit a local school/orphanage and it has been those visitors that sustained us. With Almost no visitors for the last two years we are struggling. It is estimated that it will be at least 2017 before tourism levels are restored..... Lack of sponsorship to support teachers to get higher education, i.e to purchase degree courses for effective learning in school. Local Businesses have in the past supported this aspect of the institution but because of the lack of tourism on which the whole area depends our best supporters have found it difficult. SCHOOL PROGRAMS Schooling Pupils receive a full day of education, literacy, numeracy, geography and social skills. Music and dancing and learning through play is encouraged. Feeding All the pupils are fed while in school. Those from the poor families cannot afford food in the lunch hour so all pupils receive a meal at lunchtime and are also fed porridge at break times. All food is reliant on donations from well wishers and supporters. The cost for food is approximately 3000 kenyan shillings per day (£25.00 sterling)
WE SINCERELY HOPE THAT YOU HAVE FOUND THIS INFORMATION ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION OF INTEREST AND THAT MAYBE YOU CAN HELP US IN SOME SMALL WAY TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL SUPPORT TO THE CHILDREN IN OUR CARE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP OR KNOW MORE ABOUT US PLEASE CONTACT: ABDALLA JUMA NGOVI P.O. BOX 1121 – 80400 UKUNDA, KENYA Tel: +254 72469 3851 EMAIL: paparazijunioracademy@yahoo.com ENDORSEMENT My name is Pamela Charles Charo, I first visited Paparazi soon after it opened in 2009. I was one of this FIRST VISITORS sent to meet the children and the staff when I enquired at my hotel about a local ‘project’ to visit. I had been visiting Kenya on and off for over ten years and for many years I was involved in the support and schooling of children from poor backgrounds through the organisation ActionAid. My friend Helena and I (Helena is a primary school teacher in the UK) , were so impressed with what Abdalla was already achieving and his plans for the future we immediately pledged ourselves to doing what we can to help. On that first visit we bought books and pens and Helena spent some time teaching... Helena has been back when she could and me....well I am now married to a local and at present divide my time between working in the UK and going ‘home’ to Ukunda a couple of times a year. I had a great time in 2010 when we celebrated the success of Paparazi Junior Academy’s FIRST YEAR. Each time I go back I am laden with books and pens toys and ‘thank you’ gifts for the staff as well as any cash donations I have raised. ABDALLA and the staff do a fantastic job, they get no help from the Government and provide a truly BRILLIANT DEDICATED SERVICE to the children and families PLEASE feel free to contact me if you wish to know more or to offer support. pam.broom@btinternet.com Tel: +44 (0)7733 243842
