Welcome to the website of the Museums in the Highlands

This is a journey across 31,000 km2 of moors and mountains, the odd city (Inverness) and countless towns, villages and townships.  This is an opportunity to glimpse the familiar or the forgotten, from times gone by and earlier lives.  Through times before humans, as well as from prehistoric and historic periods and to the almost contemporary, the 28 museums have sights to inspire, objects to remind or stories to engage.

See armoured fish from 380 million years ago; marvel at intricate stone carvings, cottages from yesteryear; toys that you might have played with only yesterday.  Meet Iron Age Picts, rebellious Jacobites, fighting Regiments, ordinary people like you and I.

We have tales of hardship and survival, tradition and development, pastimes and pleasures, loyalty and bravery; lines in the sand and lines woven into tartan, the familiar and the forgotten.  Join us, visit the Independent Museums of the Highlands and travel in time...
