Welcome to Miscommunicado!

If you are taking a look at this website then the chances are that you have purchased a copy of 'Miscommunicado' - a collection of signs, notices and website translations compiled and submitted mostly by those who are, like myself and my family, avid travellers. If so, then Thank You!

We choose to travel with a motorhome - 'Harvey the RV'; others prefer caravans and we have it on good authority that some hardies even do it with little more than a tarpaulin. Whatever our/their chosen form of shelter we mostly prefer to stay on campsites. And campsites and their environs are filled with signs and notices - LOTS of signs and notices.

Since English is the default second language of the world at large, many places endeavour to use it to promote and fulfil their promotional and health and safety remits. Websites frequently offer an instant translation service. Luckily for us, this is where the fun starts!

Miscommunicado is NOT a fun-poke in Johnny Foreigners direction, however. More, it is a celebration of the illogical and often absurd nature of the English language. It must be a nightmare to learn as a second language - I mean, just think of the potential for trouble and incident inherent in the double entendre!

So, thank you for buying 'Miscommunicado'. I very much hope it raises a few smiles. Contributions continue to be received, which makes a second copy a distinct possibility; so if you have any such gems hidden away from your travels in foreign climes, please email them to miscommunicado@gmail.com and I will try to include them in Miscommunicado 2!

If unintentional humour generally takes priority on your reading list, above Tolstoy and Celebrity Biographies, then two further titles might meet with your approval; 'Un Portion of Chips, Bitte' and 'Gray's Shades of Fifty'.

Have a look at the separate pages for these titles, and take some reading fun with you the next time venture sur le Continent.

Thanks for Browsing - Graham Nash
