My name is Mahoro
I am a munyarwanda in Kinyarwanda the banyarwanda language we say tubahaye ikaze welcome.
In greeting we say muraho "hello" this site is a way of sharing our hospitality with all who visit and also to share our cultural herritage through the medium of Kinyarwanda art. I am an artist based in Kigali and I make both cards and paintings influenced by the traditions of my country and the wider world.
Let me first introduce Rwanda. She is a country in Central Africa, the Banyarwanda are a Bantu speaking people with ten million inhabitants. It is the smallest country in Africa. The banyarwanda people speak several languages, the native Kinyarwanda, English and French. We also speak Kiswahili an East African language brough by the Arabian slavers to the east coast of Africa.
What happened in Rwanda? Eighteen years ago, there was a genocide in Rwanda and many people in the world are aware that most of the country's history and cultural herritage was distroyed during the period of bad politics and religions that led to this genocide. So art is still recovering and if fully nurtured will be a positive means of healing the Banyarwanda society and starting a new chapter in our relations with each other and other peoples of the world.
