ESSENTIAL INFORMATION FOR 2018 AWARD
THE LORD-LIEUTENANT'S YOUTH AWARD
The purpose of the Youth Award is to recognise and celebrate the many positive activities and achievements of the area’s young people. The Youth Award particularly seeks to acknowledge the achievements of young people who have faced and overcome personal challenges and barriers to make a difference to their own lives or the lives of others.
The Youth Award has been developed and is administered by a Committee under the chairmanship of the Lord-Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty, Mrs Janet Bowen. Further details of the Committee, its officers, membership and advisers will be found on the Award’s website - www.llyouthaward.org.
Please note: There is no Group Award Category for 2018 as it was felt by the committee that the Awards are more suited to individual achievements. Individuals working within a group can still be recognized for their personal progress and achievement in the group situation.
ELIGIBILITY
The Award is open to young people between the ages of 11 and 18 – that is, between their 11th and 19th birthdays at the date of nomination.
Those nominated must live, study or work in the geographical areas of Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh at the date of nomination – please refer to the map on the website.
Individuals nominated for the Youth Award in previous years are eligible for nomination again.
NOMINATION
Nominations must be made on the Youth Award's nomination form. This is available on the website.
Nominations may be made by any individual (other than the applicant) or by schools, colleges, employers or youth organisations.
The opening date for nominations for the 2018 Awards is 18 September 2017 and the closing date is 30 November 2017.
AWARD CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA FOR 2018
INDIVIDUALS
Individual awards in 2018 will be made under five categories of achievement, with a winner and runner-up in each category. The categories and illustrative criteria are as follows –
1. HELPING OTHERS
Recognising individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to help others,
For instance -
Helping other young people.
Caring for a relative or neighbour in need.
Standing out against bullying or racism.
Working as a volunteer within a community-based club or environment group.
2. ACHIEVEMENT IN SKILLS FOR WORK
Recognising individuals who have shown outstanding commitment to improve/achieve in developing skills for work,
For instance -
Showing outstanding application and/or potential as a young employee with employers or businesses.
Showing personal achievements which support progression towards becoming ready for or entering the world of work e.g. – overcoming barriers, attaining awards/qualifications, developing confidence and vocational skills towards being more employable and/or gaining employment and/or getting a college or other training place.
3. IMPROVED ACHIEVEMENT IN SPORT / PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Recognising individuals who have shown outstanding commitment to progress/achieve in sport/physical activity.
For instance -
Outstanding improvement in individual sports.
Outstanding improvement as a team player or leader.
Outstanding progress in overcoming personal barriers to sports achievement.
4. ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS
Recognising individuals who have shown outstanding commitment to progress/achieve in the Arts,
For instance -
Outstanding achievement in music, dance or other artistic activity
Outstanding achievement in the creative arts.
Overcoming personal barriers to achievement in the arts.
Performing arts.
5.COMMUNITY ACTION
Recognising individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their community through volunteering, community activism or representing their peers,
For instance –
Encouraging and ensuring voices in the community are heard so they can then influence decision making
Helping to clean up or restore their community’s environment
Improving links between the generations.
Raising funds for community organisations.
Helping with other community activities.
FORM OF AWARDS
Those nominating a young person will be asked to suggest a suitable form of prize which would be beneficial to their interests, studies, or current or future employment. For winners, this will be to the value of £500. The runner-up in each category will receive a prize to the value of £100.
NB Cash prizes will not be awarded.
DECISION PROCESS
All eligible nominations will be considered by the Management Committee of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Youth Award, who will choose a winner and runner-up in each category. The judging is based entirely on the material contained within the Nomination form, which has been designed to allow nominators to include a good deal of supporting information. We therefore encourage nominators to ensure they complete the Nomination form in as much detail as possible, so as to give their candidate every opportunity of success.
AWARD CEREMONY
The 2018 Awards will be announced and presented at a ceremony on 19th March, 2018.
