The Cruise of
the Calgaric
12-29 August, 1933
This WebSite was created on the 30th of July, 2014, to celebrate the "Peace Cruise" of Scouters and Guiders that sailed on the SS Calgaric from Southampton 81 years previously, on the 12th of August, 1933.
On board were the the Founder of the Scout & Guide Movements, the Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell and his wife, the Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell (Robert, 76, and Olave, 44) and their three children, Peter (20), Heather (18) and Betty (16). The party consisted (approximately) of 100 Scouters (including lady Cubmasters); 475 Guiders; and 80 non-Scouts or Guides.
They travelled to Rotterdam and the Hague, through the Kiel Canal to Gdynia and Danzig, thence to Klaipeda and Palanga, Riga, Tallinn, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Oban, and terminated at Liverpool on the 29th of August, 1933.
After the cruise, a book was published entitled "The Cruise of the Calgaric". This WebSite carries that book.
----oOo----
One day in August 1932, The Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell, was bumping along in a bus over a stony road in Poland, in company with a number of other Guiders from different countries. She was thrilled by the little she had so far seen of the Polish Guides, and she suddenly burst forth to her neighbour in the bus, Miss Mander, "How I wish the Guide people in England could meet the splendid Guides in other countries! If only I could take a whole shipload of them and bring them over to see and make friends with them!"
"Why not?" said Miss Mander.
Thereby hangs this tale.
