'The Artful Dodger'1881 - 1940Alexander (Alec [or Alex] ) Bennett was a renowned footballer in the period leading up to the first World War. He played for both Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers and although he was not the first person to do so as is sometimes assumed he was the first person to obtain Scotland international caps while playing for each club. He also achieved the remarkable feat of winning League Championship medals with both Celtic and Rangers. He was extremely versatile playing at centre forward and outside right for Celtic and inside left for Rangers (and on one occasion even goalkeeper!). According to contemporary sources he was “A veritable artful dodger with rare speed and command of the ball.” and ...“He had a rare and speedy stride and when he ran it took a good man to catch him” He served in the Rifle Brigade as a second Lieutenant during WW1 returning to football after the war before becoming a sporting journalist. | ||
